Harrisburg - 6/11/08 – The House Professional Licensing Committee unanimously approved a proposal that would require Pennsylvania massage therapists to be licensed. HB2499 will require that massage therapists receive 600 hours of instruction at an accredited state school and then 24 hours of continuing education credits every 2 years.
For the last 15 years, various forms of the legislation have been unsuccessfully proposed to the state legislature. The proposal has been opposed by chiropractors and physical therapists who disagree about how to define the professional jurisdiction of massage therapists. State leaders also were hesitant to create new licensing boards for oversight of the profession so the proposals often languished in committee until the cause was resurrected. The current bill was sponsored by Rep. Keith McCall (D., Carbon)and is now scheduled to come before the House Appropriations Committee for approval before it heads to the House floor for a final vote.
