In the Forward to Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual by Drs. Janet G. Travell and David G. Simons, Rene Caillet, M.D., points out that despite being confronted daily with myofascial pain and dysfunction, the medical profession poorly understands it and frequently overlooks it. Yet, patients continue to present themselves with symptoms that are attributable to myofascial trigger points (MTP). These patients often fail to receive proper evaluation and, therefore, appropriate treatment of their symptoms.

In recent years, mainstream medical education has increasingly addressed the challenge of how to accurately diagnose and evaluate musculoskeletal dysfunction and the techniques to treat effectively; there remains, however, a real need for qualified practitioners educated in the identification and treatment of myofascial trigger points.
